Sevenoaks secured promotion to the National Premier League on Saturday with a nail-biting 3-2 victory over Durham University.  Having won their opening game by the same score line against Bath, Oaks knew going into the game that 3 points would have been enough to see them promoted.

Durham made a strong start to the game, keeping possession well and pressurising Oaks when they had the ball, however, Oaks had an early opportunity when a floated ball down the line from Andrew Ross played in Tim Warrington, but the Sevenoaks captain couldn’t quite manage to tee up David Smith at the near post and Durham cleared their lines.  Durham had an early opportunity through a penalty corner, but it was well charged down by Chris Barker.  After 21 minutes Durham made the first breakthrough, when a turnover deep in the Oaks half allowed the Durham forward to run through on goal where he rounded Richard Potton and finished into an empty net to make it 1-0.  Despite being on top Durham didn’t create many clear cut chances to extend their lead.  At the other end Oaks had a penalty corner, but Andrew Ross’s effort was blocked by the defender.  Oaks were struggling to create any clear cut opportunities and the sides went into the half time break with Oaks trailing by a goal to nil.

After a stern team talk from player coach Duncan Parnis, Oaks came out a much better side in the second half, looking more threatening on the break and more secure in possession.  9 minutes into the half, a penalty corner won by Ross, was converted by Parnis, after he exchanged passes with Ross at the top of the D, in a slick routine, to level the scores at 1-1.  Durham re-took the lead 5 minutes later with a superb individual goal, where the forward picked up the ball on the halfway line and jinked his way past 3 Oaks defenders before rolling past the advancing Potton to make it 2-1 with 20 minutes remaining.  Oaks had to push forward in search of an equaliser, but Durham defended well and prevented Oaks from creating many chances.  In the 59th minute David Smith was sent to the sin-bin for 2 minutes for a green card dished out for a mis-timed tackle, and despite Oaks being under pressure Durham were unable to add to their tally.  With 7 minutes remaining Ross earned Oaks another penalty corner and this time he was able to flick high into the top right hand corner to level the scores at 2-2.  Knowing that one more goal would send Oaks into the Premier League, they flooded forwards in search of a winner, and in the 69th minute a ball down the line to Tom Chandler allowed him to enter the D on the right hand base line, he picked out a pass to Rob Schilling, who coolly slide the ball across goal to Smith, who dived on his reverse to slot the ball into the back of the net to make it 3-2 with a minute remaining.  With little time remaining Durham were unable to find a response and Sevenoaks held on to win the game and celebrate promotion to the Premier League for the first time in the club’s 105 year history.
